School of International Chinese Language Education Jilin University

 

As a leading national university under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of China, Jilin University (JLU) was founded in 1946, merged with the former Jilin University of Technology, the former Bethune Medical University, the former Changchun University of Science and Technology, and the former Changchun College of Posts and Communications in 2000, and with the former University of Military Logistics in 2004.

 

The school of International Chinese Language Education (SICLE) consists of three departments– the Language Training Department, the Undergraduate Department, and the Graduate Department– specializing in professional Chinese language training and education for foreign students from around the world. The college has 33 faculty and 20 part time instructors, including 5 full professors  and 9 associate professors.

 

The Language Training Department is mainly responsible for long-term and short-term Chinese language training, undertaking the task of teaching public degree courses and elective courses, such as HSK Skills Advancement, for all the international students at JLU.

 

The Undergraduate Department is responsible for the major of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of other Languages (TCSOL), and several interdepartmental undergraduate programs with the following majors: Chinese Language and Literature, Journalism, Communication, Chinese History, Archaeology, International Trade, Law, Business Administration, Accounting, Financial Management, Marketing, and Human Resource Management.

 

The Graduate Department consists of two master majors: Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of other Languages (MTCSOL).

 

SICLE actively explores international Chinese teaching cooperation projects, participates in the construction of Confucius Institutes in the United States, Ukraine, Argentina and other countries, and establishes long-term cooperative relationships with world famous universities, such as the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Korea University, Okayama University of Japan, Stockholm University of Sweden, and Hebrew University of Israel, etc.

 

More than 600 students from more than forty countries (the United States, Canada, Russia, Germany, France, Sweden, Iceland, South Korea, North Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Thailand, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Congo, and Sudan among others) are studying in SICLE.  Some of these students have competed in and obtained success in national language and culture competitions such as "Chinese Bridge" and "Staying in China."

 

As Hanban Confucius Institute Headquarters for Northeast China, SICLE undertakes the selection and training of volunteers and Chinese teachers for overseas Confucius Institutes, as well as conducts non-native Chinese teacher training.

 

SICLE has been praised worldwide for its rigorous and superb scholarship dealing with Chinese language training and for the high caliber and professionalism of its alumni.
